The first Old Brentwoods’ Cricket Club was formed in 1906 and was formally constituted for the second time in 1929.
Today the club runs two Saturday League sides, with a third side that plays friendlies, in addition to a Sunday side that plays friendly fixtures. There are currently around 50 registered members. Net practice sessions are held on Wednesday evenings throughout the summer.
The Club also runs a regular ‘Bunglers Tour’ to Southsea every August and organises several social events during the year.
In 2009 the first XI finished 3rd in their league and whilst this was not an improvement on the previous season they only missed out on promotion as they had more games abandoned due to weather than their opponents.
The second XI finished 5th which was a vast improvement 9th the previous year.
The third XI revival continued this year and they played a total of 10 games in all against varying opposition but was composed mostly of colts. Hopefully this will continue next year and the social side of the club is developing in line with the third XI’s growth.
Many colts played in the 3rd XI, whilst two played regularly for the 2nd XI and both went on tour. The tour was excellent yet again and thanks must go to David Wasley for organising it.
We have been developing the colts section for a number of years now and are starting to see the benefit of this work. A number have now joined the senior club and are paying senior subscription fees; in the near future it is hoped that those now playing under 15’s cricket will feed into the senior club. In addition to the on-flied assistance of the colts they have also managed to secure a grant for new net facilities. The colts did this off their own back and we will only require a small amount of fundraising to be able to put the nets up and they should be in use for the 2010 season.
We look forward to the 2010 season!
